Jury reviews competition entries for the Upper Palace Garden
Stuttgart’s opera house dates back to 1912 and is not only considered one of the most significant theater buildings in the world, but also impresses with its outstanding acoustics. It has long been clear that the Littmann Building on the Upper Palace Gardens requires extensive renovation and expansion. Renowned architectural firms from across Europe—including London, Paris, Helsinki, and Stuttgart—have now submitted their initial designs as part of a two-phase architectural competition.

117 years ago, a theater project of international significance was launched in Stuttgart: the construction of what is now the opera house on the Upper Palace Gardens, known as the Littmann-Bau. With the launch of the realization competition for its renovation, modernization, and expansion, a new chapter now begins in the history of the world's largest three-genre theater.

With the project approval for the new workshop construction of the Württembergische Staatstheater Stuttgart, located on the site of the existing scenery storage facility at the former sugar factory in Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt, the first sub-project of the comprehensive opera renovation proceeds to the next planning phase on schedule.
Technical Excursions to Major Renovation Projects in Germany
The ProWST team emphasizes constructive exchange with the planning teams of major renovation projects for theater buildings in Germany. Visits have already been made to Frankfurt, engaging with the New Opera and Drama staff unit, as well as the planning team in Mannheim, responsible for the renovation of the Nationaltheater. Further stops included Karlsruhe, with a site visit to the renovation and expansion of the Badisches Staatstheater, and Nuremberg, where the renovation and expansion of Bavaria's largest multi-genre theater is being implemented.
